Our car tyres tend to be overlooked until a problem occurs. You get in your car, start it and hit the road without a second thought. However, your tyres are the only component of your car that’s in contact with the road. It can compromise your and your passengers’ safety if you do nothing about it.
Early detection is better and safer for you and your wallet. Here are 8 clear signals that you are in need of a replacement for your car tyres soon.
1. The Tread on Your Car Tyre is Getting Too Low
The tread of your tyres is what adapts to the road surface, particularly on wet roads. Because of wear, this rubber will lose its shape as time passes under the influence of friction.
Test tread wear by placing a coin inside the tread or look for the built-in tread wear indicators. Those raised bars will not be able to shed water properly when worn down to that point. This results in skidding and a longer stopping distance.
2. You Constantly Need a Tyre Repair
If a nail has been misplaced, it’s not hard to replace it. However, if you go to a workshop every few weeks for another patch, then you have a bigger problem.
Several repairs have weakened the tyre. More than one puncture means that the rubber is wearing out, and a quick patch will not make you safe.
3. Strange Vibrations in Your Steering Wheel or Rim
Do you feel an unusual shaking through your steering wheel or the car floor? While bad wheel alignment causes some vibrations, damaged tyres cause them too.
Internal belts inside the tyre can shift or snap over time. If the shaking continues on smooth roads, get your tyres checked immediately before a simple vibration turns into a major failure.
4. Visible Cracks Mean It’s Time for a Car Tyre Replacement
Singapore’s weather is tough on rubber. The sidewalls dry with use and in the presence of constant sunshine, heavy rain, and humidity.
Take a closer look at the sidewalls of your tyres. Surface cracks or splits are an indication of degradation of the rubber. Cracking will make the sidewall brittle and make it more likely that you will have a sudden leak.
5. Bulges and Blisters Mean a Trip to the Tyre Shop

A deep pothole or kerb can cause damage to the tyre’s internal structure. Air then pushes through the outer layers, creating a wrinkle or blister on the rim of the tyre.
Please note: A bulge is a big weakness. It can explode at near top speed, putting you on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. When a blister appears, the tyre needs to be replaced immediately.
6. Ageing Rubber: A Hidden Tyre Danger
Even if you don’t drive much, tyres will age. Over a period of time, rubber hardens, becomes dry and wears naturally.
Check the “manuf” section of the tyre sidewall for the 4-digit manufacturing date. However, if they are tyres that are five years old or more, even if they look good, the rubber may be so hard that it doesn’t offer good traction.
7. Uneven Wear That Requires a Workshop Visit
Take a look across the surface of your tyre. If it does, is the rim on the inside smoothed, or does it have good tread on the outside?
Over- or under-inflated tyres, problems with the suspension or bad wheel alignment. The tyres will need to be replaced as uneven wear makes it more difficult for the driver to operate the vehicle.
8. Frequent Flats? You Might Need Tyre Services
Regularly pumping air every few days to clear the low-pressure light? Slow leaks can happen for any of a number of reasons, including a leaky valve stem seal, a bent rim or small cracks in the rubber.
If there is no possibility of seeing a nail in the tyre, but the pressure is slowly decreasing over time, the tyre is worn. Don’t fall victim to the flat and develop a regime to change that.
